Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; the stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Nicolas soon would be there; the children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of sugar plums danced in their heads.
Did you know that a sugar palm is not simply a candied or sugar-coated plum? Nope, sugar plums are a traditional confection made from dried fruits, nuts, and spices, shaped into small, round treats. They originated in Europe during the 16th century and were often associated with holidays and celebrations. Despite the name, sugar plums do not typically contain plums; the term “plum” historically referred to their round shape. They gained cultural significance through literature, such as in the famous line “visions of sugar plums” from The Night Before Christmas, and the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker. These tags pay homage to the classic treat. The printable gift tags may be downloaded free using the form at the bottom of this post.
Materials for DIY tags:
Printer
Scissors
2.5 Inch Paper Punch
Small Hole Punch
White Cardstock
Twine or Ribbon
STEP 1 Download and Print Your Tags
Download the PDF using the link at the bottom of this page. Save it to your hard drive or a thumb drive. The PDF is a letter size, 8.5×11 inch sheet, with nine tags on a page.
For paper, use a bright white cardstock. If you do not have a printer, you can also just have them printed at an office store local to you. Once you are ready, open the file in Adobe Acrobat Reader and then print as many sheets as you need.
STEP 2 Cut Out Your Tags
I used a 2.5 inch circle punch to cut out the tags. First, trim the white border to allow you to insert the sheet and center the circle. Flip your punch over, so that you can see the design inside the frame. Then just press down. Use your small punch to create a hole for the string at the top of the tag.
STEP 3 Attach Tags
Attach the tags to your gifts using a twine or ribbon.
