I went to an 18th birthday party last weekend. I met the young man’s mom when we were assigned to dorm rooms across the hall from each other our freshman year of college. Both of us were shy of 18 when we met, and it is hard to believe her ‘baby’ is now older than we were. I decided to make a money holder birthday card for him. The design is simple and modern, and I thought some of you might like it, too. I made it editable, so that you can type a personalized message on the inside. The free printable card may be downloaded at the bottom of this post.
Materials:
Printer
White Cardstock
X-ACTO Knife
Steel Ruler
Self-Healing Cutting Mat
Scoring Tool
Double-sided tape
STEP 1 Download and Print Card
Download the PDF using the email form at the bottom of this page and save it. The PDF is a letter size, 8.5×11 inch sheet, with a 4 inch x 6 inch card (after folding.)
For paper, use a bright white cardstock. If you do not have a printer, you can also just have them printed at an office store local to you.
Download Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is free from Adobe. You must use Adobe Reader to edit the PDF, or it will not work properly. Open the file and type your custom text in the highlighted field. It will be upside down on the screen, since you will be folding it up after you print. Save and then print.
STEP 2 Cut Out Your Card
The best way to cut these is with an X-ACTO knife and straight edge. Place the card on the mat, and then lay the ruler along the edge of the card. Draw the knife along the ruler. I usually do it twice to make sure that I have a clean cut. Repeat along all edges until the white border is gone.
STEP 3 Score and Fold
Use a scoring tool and ruler to create an indention for folding across the center of the card. Place the ruler at the center point where the color bars meet the blue, then lightly score it. Do the same for the bottom tab. This will allow you to fold the cardstock cleanly, without any cracking. After you have scored, fold carefully.
STEP 4 Tape
I used a double-sided permanent tape to create a pocket for the money. I put one long piece on each side, folded it up, and pressed down. Then all you have to do is slip in a little cash or a gift card.
That’s it! Enjoy the birthday card!
