How to Make the Perfect Cheese Board

I am having the perfect lazy weekend here in Virginia. Yesterday I spent my daylight hours working in my garden and reading, before getting ready to go out. A new True Food Kitchen is opening in Arlington this week (yay!) and they generously sent me an invitation to their pre-opening dinner. I asked my friend Amy to come with, and told her to swing by my house a little early for wine and cheese.

As we all know, a cheese board is the easiest ever hors d’oeuvre. Seriously. All you have to do is throw a few blocks of cheese on a board or plate, and then dress it up with some sort of accents. Since it was just the two of us, I put out two cheeses, parmesan crisps, roasted tomatoes, and a snack mix. Then, for the final step (which was kind of unnecessary for one guest, but I planned to blog it) I made cheese flag labels. All you need is my free PDF printed on cardstock, toothpicks, scissors or a paper cutter, and tape. They look like cute little blocks of Swiss cheese. You may download your free printable using the form at the bottom of this page.

Materials:

Printer (you may also bring the PDF to a copy store near you–I used Fed Ex)
Cardstock
Scissors or Paper Cutter
Toothpicks
Double-sided tape

STEP 1 Download and Print Your Cheese Flags

Download the PDF using the link at the bottom of this page. Save it to your hard drive or a thumb drive. The PDF is a letter size, 8.5×11 inch sheet. To edit, open the file in Adobe Reader, which is a free download.  Then, just click in one of the blue highlighted fields and type. Use the tab key to move between fields. You may also print and then hand write your cheeses on the flags before you assemble them.

For paper, use a white cardstock.  If you do not have a printer, you can also have them printed at Fed Ex, Staples or an office store local to you. Once you are ready, print as many sheets as you need.

STEP 2 Cut Out Your Tags

Use your paper cutter to cut out the flags along the crop lines. You may use scissors if you don’t have a paper cutter, but it is easier to get them straight with the cutter.

STEP 3 Fold and Tape

I used plain toothpicks to make the flags. First, fold in half. Then, place a long piece of tape along the inside of the flag. Put a toothpick at the fold, then seal with your fingers.

I just love the way they came out.  Even though I only needed two flags, I printed out the entire sheet with my favorite cheeses, so it is ready to go next time I have friends over.
