I love retro holiday decorations. A couple of years ago, I fell in love with Shiny Brite glass balls, which were hugely popular in mid-century America. (I plan to post more about them when I share photos of my tree in a few days.) For this year’s wrapping, I decided to design a gift tag based on a vintage glass Christmas ornament.
Materials:
Printer (you may also bring the PDF to a copy store near you–I used Staples)
White Cardstock
Scissors
3.5 inch Hole Punch
0.25 inch Hole Punch
Ribbon
Boxed or Wrapped Gift
STEP 1 Download and Print Your Tags
Download the PDF using the link at the bottom of this sheet. Save it to your hard drive or a thumb drive. The PDF is a letter size, 8.5×11 inch sheet, with four circle tags on a page.
For paper, use a white cardstock. If you do not have a printer, you can also have them printed at Fed Ex, Staples or an office store local to you.
Once you are ready, print as many sheets as you need.
STEP 2 Cut Out Your Tags
The tool you need to make these tags is an extra large circle punch. This design is compatible with a 3.5 inch circle, but you could use a 3 inch punch if you don’t mind losing the border. I used this punch that I bought on Amazon and I love it. It is so easy to use.
First, trim most of the white border off the edge of your sheet using scissors. It doesn’t need to be straight as you will be cutting it off with the punch. Next, insert your sheet and flip the punch over so that you can center the design inside the frame. Then just press down.
Presto, you have a perfect circle. Hint: you can also use this punch to make ornament ‘ball’ tags out of any scrap paper. I love it with vintage handwriting scrapbook papers, too.
STEP 3 Punch Hole for Ribbon
Using a small hole punch, create a hole in the top center. If your ribbon is thick like the one I used, you may have to punch several adjacent holes or use a 1/4 inch punch. I just punched several holes, which are covered by the ribbon.
STEP 4 Wrap Your Gift
I used a gift box I bought at the after holiday sale at Target a couple years ago. They no longer carry that exact one, but there are several others on their website you can choose from. You can also wrap your gifts in green, red, or kraft paper.
Once your gift is wrapped, tie a ribbon around the box and thread it up through the hole in the tag. I used a luxurious red satin ribbon from the Container Store. Tie a bow, then trim the ends.
